Magic Chef Countertop Ice Maker

It’s a toss-up with the Magic Chef Countertop Ice Maker. Here I found good and bad. Normally you do with any item, so I believe what I found is normal. People who have bad experiences with items tend to be more vocal than those who have no issues. This unit was designed for entertaining and for setting up on the kitchen or bar counter and just letting it make ice. The stainless steel unit makes ice quickly, in about seven minutes. That’s pretty fast for these things.

One thing the Magic Chef does that the high end units do is allow you to select the cube size that you want. Now there are two trains of thought here. One, you want a nice size cube for your guests and want the cube to keep the drink cold and not disappear quickly. Another is that you want the ice to be made as quickly as possible if the party is big. And you can do this by setting the cube size down to the smallest setting. Many other units don’t have this nifty feature. And the smaller the cube size, the faster the ice is made.

The Magic Chef Countertop Ice Maker makes about 30 pounds of ice in 24 hours. You have to be servicing the unit to unload the ice, but that’s an average number for the countertop ice makers. It weighs 4 pounds, which is about right considering the stainless steel casing. And I like that, because it’s so easy to clean up. There is a one year parts and labor warranty on this unit.

People have been giving this a decent review after following the instructions that come with it. There are a few tips I’ve found out about the Magic Chef Countertop Ice Make, and that is, if you let it sit for about a day after it arrives at your house from wherever you order it from, it tends to let the coolant settle down and will work better. This unit will rival your ice maker in your refrigerator. And with that said, there was a great review on the unit for handicapped people who couldn’t reach the refrigerator ice maker. This sits on the countertop and it is really convenient.

For the curious, there is a tray in the back that has the water. Metal probes go down into the tray and get the water very cold. It then freezes around these probes making ice. The tray turns over and the ice and some remnant water dumps into a collection basket at the front of the ice maker, where you have the see-through window. That basket has a lot of small holes allowing the water to drain into a water storage area below, leaving the ice in the basket. Because of this, your ice is going to be at about 32 degrees, pretty wet, so make sure you take it to the freezer if you’re not going to use it straightaway.
